Installation

parsec can be installed via prebuilt binaries, run in Docker, or compiled manually from source.

System Dependencies

parsec relies on a few external command-line tools for technical media parsing and Matroska container operations. These must be available in your system's PATH:

Dependency Purpose Requirement
MediaInfo Extracts video, audio, and subtitle streams metadata. Required
MKVToolNix (mkvmerge, mkvpropedit) Reads and mutates Matroska container headers, tags, and track properties. Required
cabextract Extracts Windows Corefonts archives when auto-correcting missing fonts. Optional

Installing Dependencies

sudo apt update
sudo apt install mediainfo mkvtoolnix cabextract
sudo pacman -S mediainfo mkvtoolnix-cli cabextract
apk add mediainfo mkvtoolnix cabextract
brew install mediainfo mkvtoolnix cabextract

Download and install the official binaries for: * MediaInfo CLI * MKVToolNix

Ensure both executables are added to your system PATH environment variable.

Prebuilt Binaries

Precompiled binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows are built automatically on every release.

Stable Releases

Download the binary matching your platform and CPU architecture from the Releases Page:

Install the binary into a directory in your PATH (e.g., ~/.local/bin or /usr/local/bin):

curl -LO https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/parsec-linux-amd64
chmod +x parsec-linux-amd64
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin && mv parsec-linux-amd64 ~/.local/bin/parsec
curl -LO https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/parsec-linux-arm64
chmod +x parsec-linux-arm64
mkdir -p ~/.local/bin && mv parsec-linux-arm64 ~/.local/bin/parsec
curl -LO https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/parsec-darwin-arm64
chmod +x parsec-darwin-arm64
sudo mv parsec-darwin-arm64 /usr/local/bin/parsec
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /usr/local/bin/parsec 2>/dev/null || true
curl -LO https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/parsec-darwin-amd64
chmod +x parsec-darwin-amd64
sudo mv parsec-darwin-amd64 /usr/local/bin/parsec
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /usr/local/bin/parsec 2>/dev/null || true
Invoke-WebRequest -Uri "https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/parsec-windows-amd64.exe" -OutFile "parsec.exe"
# Move parsec.exe to a folder in your PATH (e.g., $HOME\bin or C:\Windows)

Next Steps

Enable terminal autocompletion for bash, zsh, fish, or powershell by following the Shell Completion Guide.

Prerelease / Nightly Builds

Automated builds containing bleeding-edge changes are published under the nightly tag on the Releases Page:

  • Binary artifacts with SHA256 checksums are attached to the nightly release tag.
  • You can also switch to or test prerelease builds using parsec update --prerelease.

Checksum Verification

Each release provides a checksums.txt file containing SHA-256 hashes for all binaries. You can verify the integrity of your download:

curl -LO https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec/releases/download/latest/checksums.txt
sha256sum --check --ignore-missing checksums.txt

Updating

Once installed, parsec can update itself directly via the built-in update command:

# Update to latest stable release
parsec update

# Or check for nightly/prerelease builds
parsec update --prerelease

See the Update Guide for further flags and dry-run options.

Docker Installation

If you prefer running parsec containerized without installing system dependencies on the host, official images are published on Docker Hub:

  • uppollo/parsec:latest (Stable)
  • uppollo/parsec:nightly (Nightly)

For container configuration, persistent storage mounts, and helper wrappers, see the Docker Deployment Guide.

Manual Installation (From Source)

Building from source allows you to run unreleased modifications or custom builds.

Prerequisites

  • Go (v1.25 or newer)
  • Git
  • GNU Make

Build Steps

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://codeberg.org/upPollo/parsec.git
    cd parsec

  2. Build the binary using the Makefile:

    make build

    This will produce a parsec binary in the repository root stamped with the current commit and semver version.

  3. Install to your PATH:

    sudo install -m 755 parsec /usr/local/bin/

  4. Verify the installation:

    parsec --version
